Blog Karma
Here at Pingable, we’re pretty into the whole blogging thing. We try hard to blog right, and that means having good blog karma.
What is blog karma? Simple – do good things for the internet and it will come full circle. Here is a list of ways to earn good blog karma, and a list of things that will earn you bad blog karma.
Good Blog Karma
- Be real. Don’t lie or pretend to be something you’re not.
- Work hard. Success comes from hard work and perseverance.
- Build relationships. You can’t go it alone. Plus, relationships build traffic, credibility and karma.
- Don’t push it. Be gentle with your advertising. We know it pays the bills, but it doesn’t have to impede your readers from… reading.
- Develop quality resources, good advice, helpful articles, etc.
- If not the above, than offer a unique perspective on an issue. Opinion is fine, but don’t just complain, offer solutions and next-steps.
- Create new things and new ideas.
Bad Blog Karma
- Spamming other blogs with bad comments
- Sabotaging competitors with poor feedback, nasty comments or negative/unrelated backlinks
- Paying for cheap, badly written posts
- Poorly writing content that is unhelpful and just link-bait
- Generating or automating the blogging process in any manner
- Stealing someone else’s work, or copying their ideas and simply re-stating the text
- Not being helpful to your readers, it’s why they read!

Just in case………….I have left a comment with the ToysPeriod url in the url box. Akismet usually sends those to spam.
If you don’t see a comment from me other than this notice, please check your spam folder. I’ve added yet another way that others are building up bad karma on the net.

Sure enough, this site (Akismet) sends ToysPeriod to the trash without your getting a chance to read the input. That’s a shame on everyone, mostly Akismet.
ToysPeriod is a do follow site. They invite you over to leave a comment for a free backlink. I guarantee you you will not find yourself in their trash without a thorough consideration of the heartfelt comments that you might write.
Regards,
Dr. Ann
I think you hit the nail on the head with the first two points in your good karma list. There are too many people out there that feel they need to ‘big themselves up’ in order to get famous. Sure, a little self-promotion doesn’t hurt but plenty of time, effort and honesty will pay off for you.
Cyrus, good post, focused and to the point. As an example of good karma … I find that when I give things away I receive much more.
Since I’ve started a download category on the site and have started to give away the code I’ve developed (jQuery plugins, WordPress plugins, helper classes, etc.) my traffic has increased!
Hi there thank you for a great article
I really agree with the first 2 of the Good Blog Karma 1)Be real ..I have tried to write about things that I didn’t understand and things that I wasn’t interested and you know what it shows in quality and rankings in the serps
2)Work hard..Now i’m not making a ton of money but a few dollars a week but I’ve only been doing this for a few months now and all I know it takes hard work writing good quality content and making sure they all seo properly it just like a real job offline you need to put the sweat in…however I believe with blogging ..you invest now and your reap the passive income later on!
I think this is good advice not just for blog karma or internet karma but for all things in life. Just be good to yourself and to others, don’t try to be something you’re not, and contribute positively to those around you. Things do come full circle…
From what I can tell your Carma theory is correct. You have some of the best commentators out there. I always try to make useful comments on any blog I read. Mainly because I also leave my site in my posts but, some of the comments that people leave just make you wonder how does that person think there comment is going to make anybody want to check out there site.
Bad comments is a really irritating phenomenon. I mean, how long does it take to read an article and post something constructive instead of smashing “Good article THX LOL !!” into your keyboard?
And not being helpful’s not just bad Karma – it’s a ridiculous way to try and run a blog.
these great advices on good blog and bad blog carmas will surely help you gain more knowledge on how to blog rightfully and not violating any bad acts on blogging. commenting on blogs is just sharing your opinions and thoughts or experience maybe that is related to the topic; contributing to the trend of the topic.
Perfect! I am just about to start blogging and i think i need to take down all the important points before starting of. At least it won’t make it harder for me as a first-timer and i won’t become a victim of a bad blogger image.
Do you have the John Lennon image for his song “Instant Karma”?
I agree with you, these are very helpful advice. I just hope that his karma thing is real, even on the internet.
Thank you Cyrus.
Isn’t good quality content link bait? How do you get people to link to you with bad content? I’ve thought about thinking to some sites and going this is an example of a made for adsense site to avoid but I just can’t think of an example…
Oh, and you need to prove that bad karma exists or has any effect at all.
This is one of those out-of-the-box concepts that doesn’t make sense at first (just thinking about it) and then starts to make a lot more sense as you read it. I guess I just have trouble believing it because I like to think that I add something to posts whenever I comment, but I have not had a lot of visitors (other than spammers) to most of my websites. I guess I’ll just have to work harder!
One more for good blog, a nice and good looking theme is helpful for reading posts
Learning to blog with karma is great.
