Google makes a joke about free broadband internet

Written by Dusty. Posted in Opinion

We don’t often stray from WordPress here at Pingable.  But we stumbled upon this site at Google, claiming to offer free wireless broadband.  At first I was excited because I need a solution for reliable broadband internet.  As I continued to read, I realized it was a joke, catching an inference to the quality of content on the internet today.

Google’s “free wireless broadband” service requires that you stick a fiber optic cable down the toilet where one of their Plumbing Hardware Dispatchers or PhD’s will connect the cable to a node in the sewer.  Needless to say, I was laughing out loud for some time.

Ah, geeze… too funny. The environmentalist in me really enjoyed this line:

“Users with low-flow toilets may simultaneously experience a saving-the-environment glow and slower-data-speed blues.”

Lol, is this an early April Fool’s joke? They usually do something like that for April 1, but I’d be surprised if it was online this early. How did you find this?

    Hi Rob,
I found it with a simple Google search for “wireless broadband”. I couldn’t stop laughing when I read it. (After my hopes were dashed and I realized it was a joke)

It was an April fools day joke a couple of years ago I believe.

That was an excellent April fools day joke. I wonder how many people actually stuck a fiber optic cable down the toilet! It’ll be good to see if Google can surpass that this year.

“Insert the TiSP installation CD and run the setup utility to install the Google Toolbar (required)”

I found this part the most hilarious. Forced installations are the worst.

i don’t think that its really a April fool type of thing since when it said by Google then something must be present in it and truly believe that nothing impossible for Google.

Heh, I hadn’t heard about this one. The last Google joke I was aware of was when they introduced the self aware Web server last April 1st. Good times!

Joking apart, I can really believe that Google might just get into the broadband game – look what they are doing with the phone. They have a huge market share at the moment but when Bing/Yahoo inevitably creep up they are going to have to diversify.

Brings new meaning to putting that into the pipeline lol!!!

Well, at least they tried :) But seriously, even if for some people this can sound lame, or untrue, for others without internet access – It might be quite useful.

I still find it difficult to understand google’s press release that said something like Toilet Internet Service Provider (TiSP) project is a self-installed, ad-supported online service. It is completely free to any customer with Wifi enabled PC and a toilet that is connected to the sewage system.

Haha totally ridiculous with the crazy part being that Google could actually pull something like this off if they viewed it as profitable. They have the brain power and the financial resources to pull off almost anything they choose at this point. Kind of scary actually.

Who knows, maybe sooner or later google will come up of their own broadband internet. They earn huge amount of money, so it is not impossible for them to do it but for now it’s just a joke.

Yea I definitely remember this. I thought it was true as well until I found out it was just a joke. I was ready to give up my broadband provider! But who knows, maybe in the future?

An interesting thought – I can only imagine the amount of personal surfing data to be sacrificed in exchange for free wireless broadband, via Uncle Google.
